Mr Matthews was without a shadow of a doubt the BEST teacher I ever had. From day one, I thrived on his mix of brilliance, sarcastic faux-put downs (or maybe they were genuine, gulp!) and bleak humour. He demanded the absolute best from you and if he saw that you had ability, he pushed you hard. LOVED his classes - the best laugh of my school day while learning beaucoup! 'Up to the board, Miss Duuuuuunne'. Ah, les souvenirs...! (class of'81-'85)

A wonderful teacher of French. Nothing left to chance at any exam. I won't forget his dry humour. Of course, was also smitten completely.
