The type of teacher that takes the disinterested and disruptive students and turns them into engaged pupils using his own brand of high pitched-positivity. A wonderful person. As we left the classroom for the last time before sitting our leaving certificate exams (class of 98) he stood at the door and handed us each a book with a personal message inside and told us to "read, read, read". If other teachers could learn from his attitude and approach to teaching, grades would surely go up.
I consider Niall MacMonagle the one person who most influenced my teenage years in such a positive manner. His encouragement and kindness have remained with me for 35 years. Not only did he impart his love of literature but he also connected with each student. Each break he would send me home with bags of books to read and I feel that he really understood the pain and how isolated I felt during those years. I wept when he left the Grammar. He is truly a remarkable man and I still miss him.
Mr Mac is nothing short of a legendary genius! English as a subject can sometimes be hard for some, especially analysing literature, drama and poetry. It is testament to his engaging brilliance that even my classmates who struggled with this subject were suddenly achieving incredible academic improvements. His classes were so interesting and I always looked forward to that class above all others. His energy was infectious and he always had a way in getting the very best out of his students.
My dad died in 1985, so when I got back to Wesley in September 1985 Niall got me to put my feelings on paper for the English class I was in, He helped me get through my grief . His understanding was amazing, thank you mr MacMonagle for being there for me when I was 15.
The most inspirational teacher I have ever had. I've never known a teacher with a greater passion for his work or have the ability to make the weakest of students become die hard english fans!
Great Teacher, Really knows what hes doing and how to inspire students to enjoy english more, plus he helped me get my grades up
I was one of the lucky ones - he taught me for 6 years and if I ever do get around to writing that book that is knocking around my head, it will be because of this man. Greatest teacher I have ever known.
he was a legend when i had him 25 yrs ago he made english so interesting and brought shakespeare to life which is not an easy thing to do! his enthusiasm was contageous and i learnt so much from him and he made school life enjoyable. Thank You Mr Mc.
Niall taught me and was an inspiration as a teacher. I would look forward to his classes. The best teacher I have every known.
Will never ever forget this man, he is an incredible guy. Brilliant teacher, made me love poetry and appreciate literature in a way I never could have before him. LOVE HIM.
I think that Mr MacMonagle is an amazing teacher. He is very inspirational and had boosted my grades hugely! =)
I left Wesley in 1986 and I still remember him as the best teacher I ever had. He gave me the inspiration to work hard in all my subjects. A great man.
The best teacher I have ever had. He possesses a knowledge of, and enthusiasm for English that rubs off on his students. Thinking back now, I'm aware of how lucky i was to be a student of his.
Amazingly wonderful Teacher, When he left Bandon Grammar School we were devastated...
Amazing teacher, made the magic of literature come alive in our hearts and around the room.
He is more than just amazing!!!! He is incredible!!! ZAP!
In this life time you will see genius, legacy and awe inspiring magic...but it is a true honor to meet someone of that caliber in your lifetime. I did and I still talk about the classes. It's like a concert, you can't understand unless you were there! All students present and correct. Room 26 with the marvelous 1 A3 and HIS NAME IS MR McMONAGLE!!!
Taught me in 1980 in Bandon Grammar School. Can't believe it's nearly 30 years but the man is an inspiration and a legend. I have many happy memories of that time.
this man is a diamond in the rough. a polished gem whose reflections illuminate those lucky enough to hear him speak. the confidence he allows others to discover in themselves must have a butterfly effect which can be felt by many people in many places. It was an honor to be taught by him. O Captain, My Captain
pure inspiration to a student's interest in the english language.
"We will never be together as we were" ... last comment from him in 6th year. So true! Superb teacher, made english enjoyable and understandable! not met a teacher like him!!
Macbeth, Bandon Grammar School 1983 boarding. Will I ever forget it. Fantastic teacher. Three degree later. He taught me all I will ever need to know. Thanks for a lifetime appreciation of english.

A total inspiration. Taught me 20 years ago and I haven't forgotten the poems (e.e.cummings, yeats, wallace stevens, etc) or his passion for words and their power to change the world. Thank you.

I left in '93 and still remember his classes - truly inspirational - made my last 2 years at Wesley bearable.
Rumour has it he invented English....... the kind of guy who would do his job for free and when you have a teacher of that calibre then special things will happen. 100% the best
when my sis was in hospital he always visitd her! nice guy!
Really, really inspiring man. He really adores books and by telling you about one makes you want to carry on reading it. Gr8 Man!
Mr Mac, i was terrible in english until had u for the LC.final result was great in HL eng. Still have d book u gave me b4 leaving. U are up there with the best!
My best memories of Wesley are in his classroom. He really encourages you to go out and explore the world
I don't agree, found him a bit aloof and out of touch. Would help out the few very keen people in class and ignore the others. I preferred Ms Kavanagh.
Amazing teacher! dont know how he does it. hated english till i had him. has the kindest heart!
No one could have made such a great impression on us as he did in our first english class -reciting'The Solitude Of Alexander Selkirk' on top of his desk!
Over-rated and always has been. Great impression but actually average.
Had Mr Mac for LC cert English, never a dull day! I miss his black writing on flourescent pink star shaped card!
Mr.Mac is the man! Legend doesn't come close... In his class at the moment, and it's my favourite part of the day...
best teacher ever, cant compare him to anyone, ive spoken2teachers in other schools & they all idolise him,ill remember him &what he has taught me 4ever
most wonderful teacher ever interested in everything so enthusiastic,we all wanted to be in his class. giant among men
i've only had him for 7 months but he's the best teacher i've ever had. so enthusiastic. he should be cloned and given to every school in ireland
A great man, who did more to inspire a love of art than any of the art department ever did. Still stops for a chat if you meet him, five years on!
A veteran of English. An outstanding teacher. You have to be in one of his classes to understand how good he is. He's like Shakespeare and Michaelangelo in one.
Had Mr Mac in first year, way back over 15 yrs ago and he was the reason I studied English in College! Wonderful man!
What a man! Despite the fact that he is in love with Elizabeth Bishop he is the greatest teacher I have ever had. keep up the good work Mr. Mac, we love you!
The most helpful, interesting and inspiring of my teachers at Wesley. Really loves what he teaches; makes you love it too.
Not just a great teacher but a great person, the only way i could describe him is, the man is a work of art himself and should be in the Tate.
Mr. Mac will always be remembered for not only being a great teacher but for being a true inspiration.
Seriously best teacher iv ever had. A1 leaving cert higher engsh!! thanx! =)
Most influential teacher I've ever had. Really tries to involve students with everything he's doing. Perhaps is a bit OTT and outrageous sometimes.
Have left school 6 years and still remember Mr Mac. An absolute legend in the classroom. Some sort of award should be created for him.
Great teacher very enthusiastic , always liked to share his knowledge with pupils.
over and above the curriculum and exams, Mr. Mac has an incredible track record of opening his classes eyes to the art, literature and culture. Superb!
What an amazing guy. Best teacher ever! He gives so much and shows genuine concern for his students. And he's quite the laugh!
Self absorbed. get rid of your holier-than-thou attitude. you are just a teacher, not a God
What a star! Decent, fair teacher. He just makes you want to read and learn! Best class ever! Thanks Mr Mac! You're a living legend!
This guy is an amazing teacher. I dont know how he manages 2 be so good
The best teacher the school has probably ever had. His mind is magical.
