Wonderful character. Probably should have retired earlier as he'd lost interest toward the end but great guy.

Funny, eccentric, he loved his subject, loved to teach and made classes interesting. I don't know why he stayed a secondary teacher so long. As a past pupil I sent him and the art teacher Mr. Weafer tickets to see the terracotta army when the exhibition came to Dublin. I hope they enjoyed it.

I am teaching now and all I can say is I realised recently that Larry subconsciously was my role model as a teacher. Superb.

I had him for Honours until '87. Great teacher, funny man - we used to call him Mozart. He was inspirational and taught me to love literature. Eccentric, intelligent and obsessed about his (then) great age. I wish I had more teachers like him.

Mr. Dempsey was unpredictable and once sat on my knee while reading aloud when I was lounging sideways in my seat. I never did that again. A gentleman, though.
