He thought art as a physical force and one realised in the studio also had a remarkable ability to see the potential in students and was an expert in pushing people to realise potential, little surprise that some of his students in the 1980's went on to become international artists.
I'll never forget the day he explained to us all where clay came from - to show up the lads who were there just for 'the buzz' he grabbed worms out of the ground, stuck them in the clay and lashed it on their desks. I went on to a very creative and fruitful career as a designer thanks to his guidance.
A truly great Art teacher, every day I use his teachings in my work. Art history with him was wonderful and he knew so much history, Heaven knows what he thought of we students.
A fantastic teacher with a passion for art. My favourite subject and one of my favourite teachers. You knew where you stood with Mr Shields.
He also taught history - usually in an inspiring manner
was outstanding as an art teacher very inspirational in the pursuit of creativity, no surprise that some of his former students from 1980 -1985 went on to become international artists and film star
